Who is Ivor Goldberg?

 

What is it Rock United?

Rock Utd. is a holiday and after-school course designed to train budding rock musicians (ages 11-17) to play together and make music that sounds good!!

You will learn:
 - Techniques of playing in a band - responsibilities as a band member to yourself and the rest of the band.
 - Sound - band and technical
 - Rehearsal techniques -
 - Understanding song form and arrangement.
 - Band dynamics

 

Instruments included are:

Electric Guitar,  Electric Bass, Drums, Keyboards and Voice.

Other instruments are welcome providing they can fit into the group - please ask!!


Amplification, drums and microphones (and mic leads) will be provided.

Anything else (e.g. guitars, FX pedals, keyboards, leads, power supplies, batteries) must be supplied by the student.

It is possible to leave instruments overnight at the rehearsal studios, however neither Rock Utd or The Mill Hill Music Complex can take responsibility for the instruments.

It is highly recommended that the instruments be insured before leaving them at the studio.

 

Requirements for participation
The groups comprise of a maximum of 8 players (depending on instruments) and attempts are made to place them in groups according to ability and age.

Players should not be beginners and will be expected to have a basic knowledge of their instrument.

 

Guitar – Knowledge of open, basic bar chords and power chords.

Bass – Notes of the fingerboard and ability to keep a steady rhythm.

Drums – Ability to hold a basic solid Rock groove for 3/4 minutes.

Keyboards – Knowledge of Major and Minor chords.

Voice – To be able to scream yer head off nicely and melodically.

 

Ability to solo is an asset not a requirement.


 

Music covered:

Each day the group prepare a new song that could be current or “retro” depending on the level and ability of the group.

 

Listen to past recordings

 

It is also possible for the group would like to perform a song of their choice providing the instructor feels it would be suitable.

Recording
The final day of the course is spent recording a song/songs learnt during course. Usually we manage to record 2 songs.

The recording will take place in a professional studio.

The student will be sent a CD of the recording after the end of the course.

Please note that the Friday recording sessions usually last 4 hours.(end 3pm)


The fee for a five-day course is £125 (£50 deposit is required on booking)
£75 balance payable on the first day of the course)
4 day courses cost £110 (£50 & £60)

Times/dates for 2007 courses:

Courses will run Monday to Friday inclusive in the weeks beginning

July 16, July 22 and Aug 28 (4 day course)

11am - 2pm

Friday session will run an hour longer due to recording- possibly 11am-3pm

 

Courses will only run if there are sufficient participants; if your preferred time is unavailable you will be offered an alternative.

Unsuitability
If a student is felt to be unsuitable for the group/course by the instructor, the fee paid will be refunded minus the time spent on the course. Usually this becomes evident very quickly on the first day.


Food
Rock Utd does not provide any food during the course.
It is advisable that the participants bring some food with them - there will be a break for lunch at aroumd 1 pm

The Mill Hill Music Complex shop sells snacks - crisps, chocolate bars, pot noodles, soft drinks etc.

Ivor Goldberg (Dip.Music Berklee College of Music, Boston)

is a guitarist, composer, teacher and creator of the legendary Axemonster concerts at King Alfreds School.

He was Head of The London Music School,  and currently teaches at

LCCM – London Centre for Contemporary Music.
Ivor has worked as a professional musician since 1984, from recording sessions to Jazz concerts.
He currently writes music for television and regularly plays with SHIR,

a Jewish music quartet (Klezmer, Traditional etc).
